What you need to know about methylene blue and red light therapy

I was once giving a talk to a group of women entrepreneurs and one of them asked a question, which we then spent two hours talking about: “How do I get more energy?”

A million dollar question!

Two of the most exciting and easy tools to implement for brain health, energy, and resilience are methylene blue and red light therapy. Used together, they form a powerful synergy.

Methylene Blue (MB):

Originally a medical dye, MB is now being studied as a mitochondrial enhancer. Afterall, we can’t talk about energy without talking about the mitochondria. Methylene blue:

  • Improves how efficiently your cells use oxygen

  • Supports brain health, focus, and memory

  • Acts as an antioxidant to protect neurons from stress

  • Has antimicrobial properties to fight off infections

  • Has helped people transition from medications used for ADD

Red Light Therapy (RLT):

Low-level red and near-infrared light stimulate your mitochondria. Benefits include:

  • Increased ATP (cellular energy) production and brain derived growth factors

  • Reduced inflammation and muscle soreness

  • Skin rejuvenation and wound healing

The synergy?

Methylene blue absorbs light in the red/near-infrared spectrum. When you combine MB with red light, you can amplify mitochondrial energy production. Translation? Better energy, faster recovery, sharper cognition.

Why this matters in perimenopause and beyond:

As hormones shift, mitochondria struggle too. That’s why fatigue, brain fog, and slower recovery become so common. Supporting your mitochondrial “engines” helps you feel sharper, stronger, and more resilient—no matter your stage of life.

How to start (safely):

  • I personally use Platinum, Biomax red light lamps.

  • Methylene blue should only be used under professional guidance—it’s powerful, and dosing matters. You should also consult with your healthcare provider if you are on any SSRI medications as MB also enhances serotonin production.

  • Quality assurance: please, do not buy Amazon products or random MB products that are heavy metal packed. Best365 methylene blue has been my go-to, because they provide a certificate of their product purity and I traveled to a neurology conference to find them. I’ve used their NeuroPro Plus and ADHD formula.

  • Lifestyle still matters: no pill should ever substitute diet, exercise, and good lifestyle habits including limiting screen time and sleep hygiene. MB and red light are tools, but they are not a crutch to lean on.

Methylene blue and red light aren’t just biohacker buzzwords—they’re powerful, evidence-backed tools for women who want to protect their brain, gain more energy and focus given the modern demands of life.
